Being born in South Africa and being on a Visa, I can’t vote in the US.
A few months before the 2020 presidential election, I started the instagram account @votingart with my friend Aurèlie Diaz (who is French and cannot vote either).
We created, commissioned and gathered over 130 pieces of non-partisan and free-to-use art from the most talented artists – all with the sole intention to encourage and spread the vote.
Art has a history of being a driver for action and the hope is to get more young people who come into contact with these artworks to pay attention and to vote.
Not being able to have personal voting influence in one of the most elections of our time pointed us to creating a utility for those who could. @votingart was specifically non-partisan, targeting potential first-time voters on both sides of the aisle, on the platform where they spend a lot of their time.
